Water-Conserving Gardens: A User’s Manual

This manual, which is authored by the Center for the Study of the Built Environment (CSBE), is part of the CSBE project on water-conserving landscapes. The project is funded by WEPIA (Water Efficiency and Public Information for Action), a program being implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Water and Irrigation and funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

People often assume that a low-water using landscape has to be barren and dry, and that it is characterized by a predominance of rocks and cacti. This could not be further from the truth. Through a series of practices related to water conserving landscapes you can create attractive and sustainable gardens that are lush and colorful, and that also save water and money. Such practices include using drought tolerant plants, incorporating hardscaped surfaces, taking advantage of rainwater harvesting, as well as following specific maintenance techniques when caring for your plants.

Conservation and Revitalisation of Historic Mostar

This brochure celebrates the completion of a five-year-long restoration and rehabilitation effort in the historic city of Mostar, carried out in parallel with the restoration of Mostar's most famous landmark, the Old Bridge [Stari Most]. While urban rehabilitation efforts are planned to continue after the opening ceremony of the Bridge, this document records and presents,in conjunction with the inauguration of the Stari Most, the considerable progress achieved so far.

From the very beginning,the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) and the World Monuments Fund [WMF] realised that the reconstruction of the bridge without an in-depth rehabilitation of the historic neighbourhoods flanking it on the picturesque Neretv riverbanks -- its matrix as it were -- would be devoid of context and meaning. Thus the whole work programme was shaped in such a way as to establish a framework of urban conservation schemes and individual restoration projects that would help regenerate the most significant areas of historic Mostar, and particularly the urban tissue around the Old Bridge.

The interest in solutions of algebraic equations over finite fields has a long history in mathematics, especially when the equations define a one-dimensional object (a curve or, equivalently, a function field). The major result of this theory is the Hasse-Weil theorem which gives in particular an upper bound for the number of rational points in terms of the genus of the curve and of the cardinality of the finite field.

The Hasse-Weil theorem is equivalent to the validity of Riemann’s Hypothesis for the Zeta function associated to the curve by E. Artin, in analogy with the classical situation in Number Theory. This upper bound of Hasse-Weil is sharp, and the curves attaining this bound are called maximal curves. Y. Ihara was the first to notice that the Hasse-Weil bound can be improved for curves of high genus, and he gave in particular an upper bound for the genus of maximal curves in terms of the cardinality of the finite field.
